Welcome to our class blog. We will use this space to expore and share our thoughts about themes from our reading, and knowledge gleaned from lectures and museum visits. We will ultimately use this forum to examine our potential impact on the world as well as its impact on us.

ReplyDeleteIn Stranger than Fiction he is using different events to bring normal people together. At first he makes the reader think these people are crazy, but then he shows the normality of these peopl. I like that he says that he is bringing lonely people together. He never talks about normal people doing normal activities like going to the movies. He shows normal people going to sex shows, demolition derby, or dressing up as a dog and a bear. It really makes me think about how the people around us can go and do such odd things. I realized that people release stress by doing different things. When he is talking about the wrestling he says that these people are hurting themselves, but they will do anything to win. I know from playing sports that even if it is really difficult I always wanted to be the best, and it made me not think about the other problems that were going on in my life. At first I thought these people are very weird, but deep down they are just normal people doing very interesting outlandish things.

ReplyDeleteA variety of themes come out from this book. Our America is the book that speaks about how the world is different in Ida B. Wells. The authors in the story are two teens talking about what they see, hear, smell in there world. They talk alot about how there is two different world in Chicago. The life that they live is where children can't be free. A place where a boy does not live up to be the age of 20. The authors lives in a world where its unsafe at night and how everyone is somewhat often feared to elders. I feel that the author is telling the world that people dont see or hear about. A world where everything is unsafe. He exploits Ida B. Wells through his stories. I believe that the real world is not really shown to people.
ReplyDeleteChuck Palahniuk is using a method where he writes about one story per chapter. Each story is a personal experience that is so out of the ordinary you could almost consider it surreal. The way he organized this book is necessary for this specific writing style. Chuck uses description and imagery to paint a picture for the reader that places the reader in the scene. I feel that Chuck is addressing that everyday humans beings may go to the extremes to release stress if they are given the opportunity. I support him in that statement. Chuck is saying that there are things that we may never experience and we should accept things as they are, This hasn't changed my view of the world at all.
ReplyDeleteThe authors of the book "Our America" explain the biggest problem in the streets of Chicago. It's so obvious that the crime rate in the city has gotten even worse right after this book was released. The authors give you a load of details about the violence and chaos in the streets. It takes me back to a disturbing moment in my life when I saw one of my best friends get murdered infront of me. He was my mentor. It's crazy because, days before he died, he told me to get my life together, get out the hood, and do something positive with my life. I feel like so much of this book compares to my personal experience in the world I live in. My friend had a 3rd grade education, and spend most of his life in prison. He never got the chance to do something different, that's why he always pushed me to do better in school. The authors of this book reflects on the bigger picture. It's not really about how the world is, it's about the people in it. The people in our streets selling drugs, shooting people, raping women, and the drop-outs gives you the view of the real world.
ReplyDeleteThe method that the author is trying to use in the story to convey a theme to me is....... (Total Revolutionary Destruction) for world peace. In another words the power of (Persuasion) or (Awareness). The author wants the reader to know her life story of things were back in her time and she wants to persuade the reader that if we thought other life stories were terrible try this story. In the story there seems to be no justice for no one at all just total completetion and deletiong for all people as in death was there only source of freedom. Until just when hope was lost and that the sun would never shine freedom was in the atmosphere. And also on a more personal serious note i think the author views and sees the world as a unsafe and scarey place. I feel that the author says about the world is (True) and that it is a dangerous but scarey place. and what this book says about the real world is that there pretty much alike just times now have just gotten worser than back in her time so they kind of have alot of things in common. To my knowledge, my view of this world is a Mystery, because its hard to crticise something when you fully dont understand its meaning of existence and what it stands for and why is it here and whats its purpose. So my view of this world is unsure because there's to much that i still need to know and understand about this world and why does it exist.
ReplyDeleteThe book that i am reading is stranger than fiction. I think the author uses a lot of shock value and extremism to convey a theme through the book. By showing the reader the more out there parts of society it makes the reader want to keep reading and it makes the reader question those people's morals and values. I beleive that this is ultimatly what the author wants the reader to do. For us to look at where these people come from and what they go through and ask ourselves why. By trying to see eye to eye with them we then come to find that they are exactly like us.
ReplyDeleteOverall, this is what i feel the author feels about the world. That regardless of age or gender or race or what group of people we hang with we are all inevitably alike in many ways. Perhaps by seeing the world in this way it will allow society to accept the differences we have.
This is definatly something that i agree with and the author has helped me to see it more clearly. By reading this book it has made me realize that there are some events or activities on this earth that i may not be able to relate to or agree with, but that we all have different ways of dealing with stress or anger. So weather it be wrestling, writing or joining in a sex filled festival we all want to be able to let out our stress and be with people who do it in our way.
In stranger than fiction he talks about how strange events make people become as one.when you first read these storys you think that its some kinda made up story and that that no one really goes through this, but they really do which is the weird part.I understand what palahnick is trying to do he is trying to put these events in so that it feels like we have walk in there shoes and so we see eye to eye with them, which is great. Its makes me see that yeah they may have a different life than me and you and they go through more pain but there just like me and you.
ReplyDeleteIn the text that I am reading Persepolis, the author Satrapi shares true events that she has experienced through a graphic novel. She takes a serious subject matter of revolution and war and presents it in comic book fashion. When looking at the pictures I discovered that the graphics enhance what is being in said in the story. In this story she is stating that in her country they also have dis-agreements with the law and that you should just bunch a group people together just because their of the same race.
ReplyDeletei feel that the authors has alot of real things to say in this story. I like that it is alot of motivation and inspiration in the story. They inspire you dont matter where you come from you can always put in good work and dont let yo surroundings effect how far you can go in life. they also teach you how to survive and be leaders, thats something i have in common with them. I also admire that they loved their family and did they best to stay strong as a family. the authoe inspires me to be the best that i can be and give it my all.
ReplyDeleteIn our America the authors are using the struggles of living in a ghetto life to convey a theme of how hard it is to survive under extreme poverty. But they give us hope that you can survive without being involved with the dangers surrounding you. Here you have two young man who are basically grown man in teenage bodies. They everything about drugs, guns, sex, and how to make extra money. The author is trying to let others that might not know about what really goes on in the streets or in the ghetto and how they deal with different situations. In the real world this ghetto life is going on everyday so I think that this book relates to different struggles they face in their everyday life. It makes me feel for them, I can view the world differently because in my world it is safe and I really don't have to worry about shooting and killing but I now know that there are people living in situations that are hopeless. I thought all people living in the ghetto were just there and were wasting there lives away but there are also ones who are trying to make it and are looking towards a better life.
