Eddie and Jack's Question

Write about an experience you've had or something you've read or heard which is like the book you're reading in some way. What about the book's way of phrasing that kind of experience is original or fresh to you?

Willie's note: Remember, we want you to do some of the work in narrowing this question down for yourself. You might have to stretch a little bit to draw parallels between your experience and the book, especially for Stranger Than Fiction and Persepolis. Make the stretch!

  1. A recent tragedy that occurred in my neighborhood. About 3 months ago, a 15 yr old boy’s body was found burned in an abandoned home’s gangway. The media created a circus and the cops handled the crime scene poorly. Flowers were set, rally’s were held, a reverend said a prayer and now 3 months later and the crime scene is still visible and the house is boarded up and not a soul cares about the tragedy that took place and the tragedies that will continue just like in Ida B. Wells. Like in my neighborhood and Ida B. Wells, these are just a few of the forgotten areas that need more attention and more funding for children’s outreach programs.
So the stories that any author tells I feel as if its not going to be original because everything is already heard of or experienced all over again. I dont feel that its something new but it is a repeat of a situation that will happen again in the future.

  2. In Stanger than Fiction he talks about bringing together people. He talks about screen writers going to a convention. That reminded me of going to a Jews for Jesus conference. We all have oen quaility in common and that is our heritage. The whole weekend is filled about learning about the heritage, and connecting with different people who share that quality. Each age group has their own conference. Middle School usually does different types of activities like a scavenger hunt. High school puts on skits. Adults have to listen to lectures. The conference makes me feel part of group. I do not know many Messianic Jews, so when we can come together I do not feel alone anymore.

  3. "Paris, je t'aime" is a movie that foils "Stranger then fiction". Both productions are a mixture of short stories and experiences. I think that "Paris, je t'aime" is more of an original idea because they had different directors shoot a short film about a person in everyday life, and then they stuck them all together. "Stranger then fiction" takes a different path. The author Chuck Palakinuck wrote about experiences that he had with people. "Stranger then fiction" was written on more of a personal level. "Paris, je t'aime" is more original, because someone had an idea to let different directors portray other people as they are in every day life. From that you can get many different perspectives of people portrayed by different directors, Instead of one view of life as it is.

  4. Just like the book I am currently reading, it was a story, and it may sound familiar to you. I believe this happened 2007 or so, a boy was murdered on the bus (CTA) infront of his School. He got shot trying to duck one of the girls from getting hit on the bus, so he basically saved her. The violence before his murder was already there, it just became a big deal once he got killed. It's funny, because even though "Our America" is a good book, at the same time, nothing in that book really surprised me.

  5. In stranger than fiction on story that i can relate to is the 2nd story. It was talking about how the wresting is look down on and how people dont think it's not a real spot. When they tell you it is and its like once you get to know about them you will have a better understanding of what the sport is really about. It's when I was part of the nerds and i thought it would always be cool to be more in to the in crowd. people talk about them just as well as they would talk about the nerd's,but I seen everything different.I did not want people to take me as a nerd or think I was too cool I just wanted to be my ownself. So I took a differnt rout then others.I came see everyone is differnt no matter if you are a nerd or popular. So I just talked to anyone and everyone because i like to get to know different people verse just talking bad about someone.

  6. The book that I'm reading is Stranger than Fiction. One thing I read about that reminded me of the book was an event that happens down south. I don't remember exactly what it was about, but it was something similar to the Testi Festival in the first chapter of the book. However, when both events are compared the one I read about is much less out there. It's a festival that teenagers take a part of and its really about rebelling. They offer alcohol and dance music for the teens and it seems that there are no rules. Girls walk around in revealing clothing and guys overly express their sexual feelings. Like guys will grope, grab, slap or even hump another girl on the street. Teens will walk the streets drunk and half naked and show no sign of civil character.

Reading the first chapter of stranger than fiction reminded me of this story I read about. Both involved unacceptable behavior in public. However, I think that the way Chuck Palaniuk wrote it in his book was much more original. When he writes he includes everything and there is no censorship. This lets the reader visualize the whole picture weather they want to or not. He also highlights on people's actions to make the reader question they're morals and values. Overall this is what creates a more orginal and interesting text.

  7. In Perserpolis Marjane tells the story of her life from the time she was 10 to 14.. during the Islamic Revolution and the terrorism in the country of Iran, I think back to September 11 2001(9/11). I would say that it didnt have anything to do with me personally but it did affect me, in many ways. Of how people of that orgin was treated. Even if they had nothing to do it, I remember when just coming home from school in the 6th grade and on the news it was this young lady of arabic decent. Who had to be about 16-17 speaking about how she's being treated and when a gentleman had literally walked up to her and decides to spit on her.

In with that I felt so disgusted to be part of such a country that would treat people so terribly and it had nothing to do with them. That's like when two friends are in an arguement, the person in between decides to take sides and disses the other friend. to be continued

  8. In "Stranger Than FIction," the other tells stories that no outsider would know about, or stories with enough details that the reader can invision every thing that he is saying. One of the most shocking events that has happend to me occured a couple years ago. My freinds Walter and Xavier and I wen to pick up Xaviers brother from daycare one day. The daycare was the house of one of our freinds, Anna. As we waited for Xaviers brother to come out, Xavier made started to play around and make it seem to walter that he was about to leave him with no way home. I knew that he was just playing around, but walter took it a little more seriously. Everyone knew that Walter was the fastest on the boys track team for the school, but I suppose he wanted to remind everyone. As Xavier started to reverse the car in the street, Walter began to run faster and faster in an attempt to catch up to the car. I watched Xavier slow down, and Walter jumped onto the hood of the car. Xavier began to speed up, but Walter remained on the hood. As Xavier pulled in front of the driveway, going about 20 miles an hour, he suddenly hit the breaks. Walter flew off the front of the hood and completed two full front flips onto the ground. We all rushed to him in shock of what had just happend. He was unable to talk or walk for about 5 minuts, there was blood leaking from his head onto to the ground all around him, we rushed him to the car, but I didnt understand why he refused us taking him to the emergency room. After we dropped him off at his house we were all worried about what was going to happen. The next morning I awoke to hear that he was in the hospital because of a Ceisure in the shower. The doctor said that his brain had been rattled inside of his head, so there was blood between his skull and brain. As time went on he recovered, but I still feel guilty that we didnt tell anyone that it happend right away.

  11. There was a situation where i got beat up for defending an innocent person for a crime that she was accused oThere f commenting. I got brutally hit by a tree branch, got spit on, and jumped on by 3 different people just because i defended this young attractive lady for being framed. I was 16yrs old in (High School)and the girl that i offending was being accused of spray painting grafiti in the gymnasium and i spent mostly my time in the gym and she was there when the inncident happened but that doesnt mean she did it...Which i am a witness cause i know who did it so that made it worse for me. The situation was fresh to me cause i nevered experienced brutality like that before but it was worth it. I just couldnt bare to see an innocent attractive woman get punished...
